The earthen cavity
Andean Flickers nest in earthen banks like this one. Also see the next image. Males show a tiny bit of red at the lower end of the malar stripe, as shown here. This bird was found high in the Piura region of northern Peru.
Signs of the flicker
The holes in this bank are typical of Andean Flicker nest sites. These were found well above treeline on the road to Abra Cruz Blanca, at nearly 16,000 feet!

This pair of Andean Flickers was found on the 12,000-foot pass between Cusco and Urubamba, Peru.
